The Inuit name for the blueberry is kigutangirnait which is often shortened to naqutit. Kigutangirnait literally means "that which causes the teeth to be removed" because they leave black spots on the teeth. An unripened blueberry is called a nanuq "a polar bear" due to its white colour. According to popular belief in China blueberries are good for the brain. While in Japan it is commonly accepted that blueberries are good for the eyes.
